This one from January 17th entitled "The Need For Solitude" – JANUARY 17.
Scripture quote:
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. —Matthew 14:23
The Devo:
Modern civilization is so complex as to make the devotional life all but impossible. It wears us out by multiplying distractions and beats us down by destroying our solitude, where otherwise we might drink and renew our strength before going out to face the world again. ...
“The thoughtful soul to solitude retires,” said the poet of other and quieter times; but where is the solitude to which we can retire today? Science, which has provided men with certain material comforts, has robbed them of their souls by surrounding them with a world hostile to their existence. “Commune with your own heart upon your bed and be still” is a wise and healing counsel, but how can it be followed in this day of the newspaper, the telephone, the radio and the television [and add to the list, Smart phones in our days, which make us anything but smart]? These modern playthings, like pet tiger cubs, have grown so large and dangerous that they threaten to devour us all. What was intended to be a blessing has become a positive curse. No spot is now safe from the world’s intrusion. OGM125-126
Lord, help me to devote the remaining days of my life to the “holy task of cultivating God.” Let that be a catalyst for whatever ministry You choose to call me to and bless me in, but help me to know You and Your heart first, so that the overflow of that growing knowledge will make me serve You all the more!
Thoughts:
How much more true are Tozer's words in our day than they were at the time of their publishing in 1960! How those play things been multiplied by modern engineering, under the premise of making lives easier, only to raise the level of noise and distraction exponentially.
What hope do we have?
It still comes down to a matter of choice for the individual; and how much we're willing to be seen as a fool as we take a stand for His Truth, and continue to preach the so called "antiquated" gospel of salvation, encouraging others to not give up the good fight, even while others, including friends and family, mock on. The only safeguard is to know the One who transcends time and space and is Sovereign over all things!
Being quiet, in solitude, before and with God our Savior is still the most beneficial thing!
I encourage you to make time for Him today!
